I had an opportunity to taste the wines from Belle Pente Vineyard & Winery this week with owner Brian O’Donnell. Brian and wife Jill have been producing wine since 1997 after moving north from Silicon Valley to the Yamhill-Carlton District of the Willamette Valley and they produce a line up of single vineyard Pinot Noirs along with some aromatic white wines. Most people think of Pinot Noir when they think of Oregon, however, Pinot Gris is gaining ground in Oregon.

Unlike the typical Italian Pinot Grigio, Belle Pente is inspired more by the French Alsatian style of Pinot Gris, producing a heavier, spicier wine with tropical characteristics and a fuller mouthfeel. While Pinot Gris or Pinot Grigio are the same grape, the Italian and French styles are immensely different. If you are looking for a fuller bodied, rounder wine, Pinot Gris is typical of that style, while a Pinot Grigio is usually a lighter bodied, citrusy and crisp wine, as opposed to the tropical or stone fruit expression of the Pinot Gris.

The Belle Pente 2006 Willamette Valley Pinot Gris ($16.50) offers a toast of vanilla and follows through with ripe stone fruit and a hint of minerality. This is a very rich, lush wine. With medium acidity, it may be a challenge to pair well with food, yet this is an interesting expression of the grape and a well-made wine that I would enjoy again.
